- 1694 B.C.) according to the "Annuals of the Four Masters."

MacCuill history before Christ:

The race of MacCuills, is a race of both legend and renown. For our Clan has many myths and legends about it. Clan MacKall (Caithness), is over 3800 years old. The first MacCuill was both a Formorian and Tuatha De Dannan. These were the first races of Ireland. The first MacCuill's, Original name, was Eochaidh Ollathair. When he became Ard Ri or High King, he changed it to Dagda or Daghda MacCuill. In honor of his God, El. MacCuill, means son of Hazael; Hazael means "El has seen." His parents were Elatha, the beautiful prince of Darkness with golden hair, and Ethinu, daughter of Ard Ri Balor the One-eye. Dagda named his kingdom Danu after his wife. His three grandsons form his son Cremit, were Ethur MacCuill, MacCeacht & MacGreine, each named the kingdom after their wives as well, during their reign as King. Erie was the last Queen and it was her the Isle was finally named after. The Reign of the three Kings ended at the battle of Tailtinn. It was a battle between the Milidh of Spain (later called Scotians, after their Queen Scotia) and the Tuatha De Dannan/Formorian alliance.
After the battle the three Kings and their wives were dead, but so were two Milidh Chieftains and their Queen Scotia. The remaining MacCuills relocated to what are Mayo and Ulster counties Ireland.

Clan MacCuill history after Christ:

In the year 323 AD, Clan MacCuill sided with the Three Collas brothers and retook the throne. Placing Urais Collas on the throne. In 326 AD, Urais Collas and his followers were exiled from Ireland. They were sent to Dalriada (present day Scotland). Three years later the Three Collas's and 9 retainers each were allowed to return to Ireland. The rest of their followers were required to stay in present day Scotland.
It is unknown when Clan MacCuill changed its name to MacKall and moved to Caithness Scotland. What is known, is that they fought with Angus Og MacDonald, at the Battle of Bannock-burn. We also know that they fought in the crusades under the King of France and King Richard the Lionhearted, in two separate crusades.
We know that in the mid 1500's James MacKall was Baron of Caithness. It is believed that this was during the resignation of the Chief Sinclair, the Earl of Caithness. The Barons son Samuel MacKall, was known as the Gentleman of Glasgow. Which seems to support the fact that The Earl's kin had resumed the Earldom of Caithness. Samuel MacKall, Gentleman of Glasgow, married Margaret Dundas, Granddaughter of Sir George Dundas, Chief of that ilk.
They are known to have had at least 2 sons James and Robert MacKall. Sometime in the early 1600's the MacKall's of Caithness, are forced off their lands due to non-Conformity to the Roman Catholic Church. They flee to Ulster, Ireland, to stay with their kin there. James changes his name to James MacKalroy and his brother Robert, becomes Robert MacKalbla.

Clan MacKall of Caithness During the Crown Wars:

During the Crown Wars Prince Charles II, goes to Ireland to get troops and support to retake the throne. James and Robert join the King's Lyfe Guard of Foote. During the Battle of Dunbar both are Captains, under Sir Colonel Alexander Stewart, the Kings Cousin. The Battle is one of the worst in Scotland. The Kirk party replaces the Commanding General David Leslie and orders the troops to move down the hill to end this war, instead of starving out a surrounded enemy. Thousands die. The Scottish Army is ordered to retreat. Sir Colonel Alexander Stewart orders his company to defend the retreat. Captains James & Robert declare "Ad ultimum" and order their companies to fight by the Colonels side. MacKalls don't retreat. The three companies hold their own until Cromwell orders a flanking maneuver that runs his Calvary thru his own men and the three defending Scot Companies. MacKall oral tradition states that Sir Colonel Stewart was killed after he surrendered. Only three MacKalls are known to have survived the battle; Capt. James, Capt. Robert, and Duncan MacKall.
Ten-thousand Scottish prisoners were taken. 4900 of that number were left to die as they were to wounded to march. The rest were marched to Durham Cathedral on a 8 day hard march, 118 miles away. 3000 make it to Durham Cathedral. Making this the original Trail of Tears. Once there, they are starved, beaten, and sold. 150 of whom are sold to the new world. The three MacKall's are sold to the Saugus Iron Works, in Massachusetts. They are shipped on the Unity, in November and arrive in December, to the new world.

Clan MacKall (Caithness), the New World:

Little is known about what happened to Robert and Duncan MacKall. As for James MacKall, he later marries Mary Farr, the granddaughter of Old Farr of the May Flower Colony. James was born 1620 AD and died 1660. Before his death his wife blessed him with a set of twins Rebecca and James MacKall. Rebecca remarried Richard Thayer.
James MacKall II, married Anna Winter. They had two sons Anthony who dies as an infant and James MacKall III. James MacKall III, marries first Rachael Turner and second Hannah Greene. It is because of Rachael and Hannah that our Great Clan is as big as it is today.
