Originates from Hepburn in the parish of Chillingham in Northumberland, where a family of this name lived from 1271 until the end of the eighteenth century.
The founder of the family was Adam de Hepbourne, said to have been taken prisoner by the earl of March, who later gifted him lands in East Lothian for saving the earls life from a savage horse.

At one time the Hepburns were quite influential in East Lothian and in the 1500's there were Hepburns of Hailes, Waughton, Smeaton, Bolton, Alderston, Bearford, Beanston, Humbie, Keith, Nunraw, and Monkrigg.
