I'm working on a large project on Riddell family from Scotland (borders area excluding Roxburgshire prior to 1620) to Northern Ireland(1620 to 1750) to Londonderry, New Hampshire parts of which became...I'm working on a large project on Riddell family from Scotland (borders area excluding Roxburgshire prior to 1620) to Northern Ireland(1620 to 1750) to Londonderry, New Hampshire parts of which became Windham. (1750 to 1763) and Colrain, MA (1763 to ?) to Preston Corners New York. This is the direct ancestors of Dr. William Pitt Riddell, Dr. John Leonard Riddell (New Oreleans,Louisiana , Dr. George Riddell (to Palmyra Wisconsin).
There were two Scottish Riddell families one from Lilliesleaf and the other from Northumberland which existed at the same time. In the borders area both families intermarried twice in two generations one of which would have been a first cousin marriage for the combined Northumberland Riddells and Borders Riddell family. (Note that didnt include the Argylshire Riddells who allied with the Campbells or the Fifeshire Riddells or the later Aberdeenshire Riddells.
My biggest question is: In all the lists I have seen about King James Plantation in Northern Ireland most do not include Roxburgshire in the "Borders" as included in the Plantation Scheme, WHY?
The literature does say that King James wanted to have one united kingdom and the Border Reiver clans stood in the way so he offered them a chance to go to Northern Ireland. This however did not include Argylshire which was soundly defeated in earlier battles and the Scottish coast closer to Ireland which traded with the Irish.
