(Dunchad) Duncan, is without doubt one of the earliest and most Prominent Royal Names in Scotland and Britain– surnames being introduced by the Normans around 1120 AD – and originates from the Dalriadan Celtic Scotii original (Scots) from Ireland who colonised the south west of Scotland from about the 4th c AD.

One of the Kings of Dalriada in western Scotland was Dunchad (Duncan) mac Conaing who co-ruled Dalriada with Conall II (c. 650 - 654). He was defeated and killed by Talorcan mac Enfrith, king of the Picts, in a battle at Strath Ethairt.
the Kingdom of the Dalriada was to expand eastward into what came to be known as the Forest of Atholl and Strathearn (from the river Earn) and northward into the area of Elgin. The union of the lands of modern Scotland began in 843, when Kenneth MacAlpin, then King of the Dalriada was to start the unification of the four kingdoms of Northern Britain and the birth of a single united nation of Alba (Scotland).
Records from this time are scant and it is not until after the unification of the Celtic Scots of Dalriada and the aboriginal Picts of northern Britain by Kenneth MacAlpine 843AD do we start to see the name significantly being used in other parts of Scotland. One of the earliest accounts is that of the Scots Gaelic writings of the 11th c. in the ‘Book of Deer’, the oldest Scots Gaelic writings known in Scotland today, written by the early Christian Monks of the Abbey of Deer in Aberdeenshire.
The first mentions of Dunchad, Donnachadh (Duncan) as a Clan was from the early part of the 14th c and the Wars of Independence which ended with Robert the Bruce’s victory over the English at Bannockburn.

Robertsons are lineal descendants of Celtic Earls of Atholl, whose progenitor was King Duncan I (Donnchadh in Scottish Gaelic), eldest son of Malcolm II. Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia supports this.
Wars of Scottish Independence
The clan's first recognised chief, Donnchadh Reamhar, "Stout Duncan", son of Andrew de Atholia (Latin "Andrew of Atholl"), was a land-owner and leader of a kin-group around Dunkeld, Highland Perthshire, as history has it, an enthusiastic and faithful supporter of Robert I (king 1306–29) during the Wars of Scottish Independence; he looked after King Robert after the Battle of Methven in 1306. The clan asserts that Stout Duncan's relatives and followers (not yet known as Robertsons) supported Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. His descendants became known (in English or Scots) as the Duncansons, or Gaelic Clann Dhònnchaidh, "Children of Duncan". Duncan is believed to have been killed at the Battle of Neville's Cross and was succeeded by Robert, from who the Clan Robertson takes its name, Robert Riabhach ("Grizzled") Duncan, 4th Chief of Clann Dhònnchaidh, was a strong supporter of King James I (1406–1437) The Robertson crest badge of a right hand upholding an imperial crown was awarded by James II (1437–60) to the 4th chief on 15 August 1451 as a reward for capturing his father's assassins. The highly unusual third supporter (below the shield) on the Robertson coat of arms, of a "savage man in chains" is in reference to the capture of Graham. It is in honour of Robert Riabhach that his descendants took the name Robertson. James II also erected the clan lands into the Barony of Struan, which took in extensive lands in Highland Perthshire, notably in Glen Errochty, the north and south banks of Loch Tay and the area surrounding Loch Rannoch.
