The meaning of the Flett surname is not certain - probably a habitational name originating in the Orkneys, possibly related with an Old Norse term denoting a strip of arable land or pasture. On the other hand it may be from the Old Norse byname Fljótr ‘swift’, ‘speedy’. The surname is now most common in North East Scotland, and in Orkney.
