Is Bean and Bain the same?

Yes. The two spellings are simply variations of the same. For instance, in my family both spellings have been used from father to som (or daughter). They are both pronounced Ban. MacBain/Bean are also the same as the name without "Mac" (or the abbreviated form "Mc"). Mac means "of"--or "son of".
